Trying A Chocolate Milk Straw For The First Time

Date of experience: 31st December 2025 - New Experience Number 49.

Trying a chocolate milk straw isn’t exactly one of the most challenging things I’ve done towards my 52 new things a year challenge – but it still counts. If it’s new, it counts.

With less than 24 hours until the end of the year, I was in full “quick wins” mode and needed a few easy additions to reach my target.

On a routine supermarket trip, I spotted a packet of chocolate milk straws and decided that this was, objectively, the kind of low-effort novelty I needed.

One thing I hadn’t fully appreciated is that it would lead to writing several paragraphs about the mechanics of sucking through a straw. But here we are.

What Is A Chocolate Milk Straw?

It’s a straw that’s full of tiny chocolate flavoured beads. To stop the beads from falling out, the straw is crimped at each end.

The milk passes through the chocolate beads as you suck it up through the straw, giving it a chocolatey flavour.

It’s essentially a low-tech, highly efficient way to turn milk into something more interesting.

It’s something we never had when I was growing up. We used to have powder which although gave the milk a delicious taste, it invariably wouldn’t mix properly and left claggy lumps at the bottom of the glass.

So trying a chocolate milk straw was like some weird time travelling moment, where I was back to being 8 years old, but in the present day.

Aren’t Chocolate Straws For Children?

Well, the marketing and packaging certainly seemed to be aimed at a much younger audience, but there’s absolutely no upper age limit stipulated on the labelling.

Fortunately curiosity doesn’t care what age you are.

They’re Easy To Use

These are ridiculously simple. Just pop the straw into a glass of milk, and suck.

Then enjoy the freshly flavoured milk with every mouthful.

The Experience Of Trying A Chocolate Milk Straw

It was, unsurprisingly, just like drinking through a regular straw. I don’t know why I thought it might be more advanced than that.

Although, because of the beads and the tapered ends, you need a tiny bit more suction power than you would ordinarily use.

The Taste

I discovered I quite liked it

I don’t know about you, but I’m not a massive fan of the taste of plain milk as a drink. I much prefer it with a bit of flavour.

The milk tasted consistently chocolatey from start to finish, which I wasn’t expecting. I thought the flavour might fade, but it stayed surprisingly even throughout.

It also avoided being overly artificial or sickly, which was a risk given the colourful packaging.

Will I Have A Chocolate Milk Straw Again?

I really liked it so it’s highly likely I’ll be having another one.

It’s a bit of a game changer if you don’t like the taste of plain milk, and I think it would be brilliant to try it with different types of milk too.

New Experiences Can Sometimes Just Mean Being Curious

Trying new things doesn’t always mean doing something daring, courageous, or scary.

Sometimes it’s just about noticing something slightly unusual in a supermarket and deciding to give it a go.

And every now and then, those small moments of curiosity are enough to make something ordinary feel a bit more interesting.
