Unusual Things to Do in York:

Ideas Beyond the Tourist Trail

A mesmerising city with history on every street, beautiful buildings, gorgeous green spaces and more than its fair share of cosy coffee shops and delicious dining experiences, York is the place I call home.

If you’re visiting for the first time, it’s a stunning city that’s not too big in size but mighty in content. There are plenty of blogs and resources covering the essential tourist sites, and there’s a very good reason they’re popular.

But what if you’ve already seen the Minster, wandered the Shambles and walked the city walls? What if you’re looking for something a little different?

That’s where Challenge Fifty-Two comes in.

Trying unusual things in York

Since 2018, I’ve set myself the challenge of trying 52 new things every year. And because I live in York, quite a few of those adventures have happened right here on my doorstep.

Some have been delicious. Some have been downright bizarre. Whilst some have pushed me well outside my comfort zone. And a few have left me thinking, well… that was different!

So this isn’t a list of the usual things to see in York. It’s a collection of unusual experiences you can actually take part in – from making chocolate and creating your own gin to throwing axes and playing underwater hockey.

Whether you’re visiting York and fancy doing something different, or you’re a local looking for something new to try, I hope you’ll find something here to tempt you.

And yes, I’ve tried a fair few of them myself.

Looking for something I've personally tried?

I’ve tried quite a few of these recommendations myself, and where I have, you’ll find a link to my experience so you can discover what I thought, what surprised me and how you can give it a go yourself.

Others are still on my list – which means this page will hopefully continue to grow as my own Challenge Fifty-Two adventures do.

  • I tried it: Despite regularly passing many of them, I still discovered some I’d never noticed before. Full write up coming soon.

You don't have to travel far to have an adventure

One of the things Challenge Fifty-Two has taught me is that you don’t necessarily need to get on a plane, book a holiday or head off into the wilderness to find something new.

Sometimes, an adventure is waiting just around the corner. Living in York has given me the opportunity to try things I might otherwise have overlooked, from unusual sports to creative workshops and experiences that have made me see my home city a little differently.

York has a wonderfully unexpected side

It’s easy to associate York with its medieval streets, historic buildings and ghost stories. But there’s another side to the city, too.

Where else can you try underwater hockey, learn light sabre combat, attend a Georgian dance class, investigate the paranormal or make your own potions?

That’s what I love about seeking out unusual experiences. They reveal a different side of a place, even somewhere you’ve called home for years.

And I've still got plenty left to try

This list isn’t finished. There are still experiences on my York wish list that I haven’t got around to yet, and I’m sure I’ll discover more along the way.

That’s the beauty of Challenge Fifty-Two. There’s always something new to try, something unexpected to discover and another opportunity to step outside my comfort zone.

I’ll keep adding to this guide as my adventures continue, so do come back and see what else I’ve discovered.

Have you tried any of these unusual things to do in York, or discovered something I should add to the list? I’d love to hear about it. I’m always looking for new ideas for Challenge 52!
